To the end of 2012, the residential market had shown the best long-term performance of all of the UK’s main asset classes (13.8% p.a. over 42 years). In comparison, the equity market (FTSE All Share Index) recorded a total return of 12.3% p.a. This is an additional total return of 3.4% p.a. On a total return basis it had also beaten commercial property in the 5, 10, 15, 20, 40 and 42 year time periods.
