Cernunnos
Cernunnos is the Celtic god of fertility, life, animals, and the Underworld [Otherworld]. Cernunnos is represented as a human male with antlers and ears of a stag, he is usually depicted as sitting cross-legged.
Cernunnos alternates with the Goddess of the Moon in ruling over life and death, the cycle of rebirth and reincarnation. Cernunnos is born at the winter solstice, marries the Goddess at Beltane, dies at the summer solstice [through his association with the Oak King] and finally rides forth from the Underworld at Samhain.
Cernunnos is, unlike most Celtic divinities, unique in as much as his image appears pre-Roman, he is always accompanied by animals especially the stag. |
